The Plot In You has been one of the fastest growing bands in the metal genre, and for good reason. The Plot In You is an American metalcore band formed in 2010 in Toledo, Ohio. The band has gained recognition for its emotionally intense music, blending elements of metalcore, post-hardcore, and alternative metal. They are known for their heavy, aggressive sound paired with melodic hooks and introspective lyrics. They have always been a band known for their ability to evolve and push the boundaries of metalcore.
Their latest series of singles, spread across three volumes, showcases a remarkable journey of growth and musical refinement. From the raw, heavy intensity of their early work to the more emotionally charged and genre-blending sounds heard in their later releases, the band has continually redefined what it means to be heavy and melodic. In this review, we’ll dive into each volume, exploring the evolution of The Plot In You’s sound from the brutal intensity of Divide to the reflective and powerful Spare Me. Let’s take a closer look at how these nine singles showcase the band’s range and musical maturity.
Vol. 1
Divide – October 25th, 2022
The first single released for this section of music. It’s heavy and a great start to this nine-track single release. The chorus is smooth and catchy, but everything else about this song is brutally heavy. Lead singer, Landon Tewers shows off his incredible range, from cleans to harsh vocals. I believe this was his best work to date. This song foreshadowed what was to come, but many like me included, didn’t expect that the band was going to evolve into the amazing sound they are in. This band has evolved a lot over the last decade, but this was a great introduction and first taste of what was to come. 8/10
Left Behind – February 8th, 2023
A gritty, more radio friendly sound than the previous single. That doesn’t mean it is worse. A completely different style, yet the band maintains a similar sound. They have a vast range, and these two singles showcase that. While not being as heavy, this song has more emotion. You can hear it in Tewers voice, it’s gritty and emotional. It matches well with the emotionally charged lyrics. The band didn’t need to fit in a breakdown or force anything overly heavy. It’s close but this is my favorite song from Volume 1. 8.6/10
Forgotten – August 11, 2023
Yes “Divide” was heavy, but “Forgotten” is a step above that. It’s brutal. The lyrics cover a unique topic, while not being far out there. Furthermore, this single uses pauses and silence in such a masterful way. They cut out all the instruments and isolate the vocals to make them stand out more. Not enough bands use this technique, and it can be done poorly, but that’s not the case here. These three singles give listeners a variety of topics and sounds in just three songs. This is the heaviest song out of the nine and brings a sort of freshness to the brutally heavy music scene. 8.5/10
Overall Grade: 8.4/10
Vol 2.
Closure – January 19th, 2024
If you were questioning the band’s range in sound, the releases up to this point should put that to rest. This arguably is their “safest” or most “radio-friendly” song of the nine. While the guitar is chunky and heavy, majority of this track is on the softer side. Tewers sings the entire song, once again showing his vast range. This song has a groove in the chorus that makes it easy to put on repeat. I love the lyrics as well. The sort of acceptance coming after a breakup or a broken relationship isn’t covered in songs as well as it’s done here. This song, personally, came out at a great time as I was starting to get acceptance in my personal life after a breakup. The lyrics really resonated with me, and I loved the melody while still containing heavy riffs. 8.7/10
Don’t Look Away – March 8th, 2024
The band thus far has gone heavy to catchy, heavy to catchy every other release. This song sounds pissed off, and the breakdown is wildly entertaining and unique. It’s like a muffled breakdown, a tease until the second one comes in. The guttural “Fuck” is so satisfying during the last moments of the song. While this song isn’t as heavy as their music from their early days, it sounds angrier and is more emotionally charged. For me, that makes it sound more polished, genuine and creates a heavier atmosphere, even though musically it isn’t strictly “heavy.” 8.6/10
All That I Can Give – May 10, 2024
I wish this song was longer because it’s my favorite out of the nine. The back and forth of sounds ends here, and this song is a combination of both heavy and catchy. I love the drums in this song, as it stands out a lot during the versus. The chorus is catchy while still emotional and heavy. It also is one of my favorite songs lyric wise. It hits close to home for me. This song combines the best components of the previous tracks and puts it into one beautiful masterpiece. 9.2/10
Overall Grade 8.9/10
Vol 3.
Been Here Before – August 2nd, 2024
The bar was set so damn high for this release. This song is great, but it was up against six singles that never missed. Any small blemish hurts this track because of the amazing release, time and time again. That said, this is a great song, it’s my least favorite of the nine. It’s catchy, groovy and fun. Musically, this song is more upbeat while the vocals are raspy, emotional and blurs the line between singing and screaming. Tewers is incredible at doing that. This song just falls a little short for me, still a great song. I do love the ending to this song. It’s a special touch, unique to this track. The high pitched singing with simple instrumentation backing works well. 7.1/10
Pretend – September 27th, 2024
The first part of the chorus falls short for me, but the second half saves it and turns it into a great chorus. If that second part of the chorus wasn’t there, it would be lacking and sound almost off to me. However, it’s there and this song is good. Not great but good. I love how each song is so unique and one of a kind, vocally, lyrically and instrumentally. My least favorites could be other listeners favorites. 7.5/10
Spare Me – November 8th, 2024
The finale of this amazing stretch of singles doesn’t disappoint. The band continues to find ways to blend heavy, harmonies, catchiness and brutal breakdowns into their music. This song is an accumulation of what I’ve praised this band for doing so well. The chorus is spoken but has some of the heaviest instruments of the nine single release. However, the song has screams paired with simple drumbeats in the beginning of the verse. Being able to effortlessly change sound and style in the same song is impressive. I’ve never heard a song like this before. 9/10
